I am so excited about an emotional podcast I just listened to with two of my favourite reproductive health advocates and one of my mentors. When I saw that the two of them had come together to do an interview on miscarriage, loss and abortion, I dropped everything I was doing, cuddled up in bed with a hot water bottle, and turned it on to hang on to every word.
Lisa of FertilityFriday.com is a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner who teaches the Fertility Awareness Method of non-hormonal birth control and reproductive health literacy. This week, in her Fertility Friday Podcast she interviewed Molly Dutton Kenny, an American home-birth midwife and educator who specializes in pregnancy loss and abortion.
I’ve taken classes with Molly in the past and am so inspired by her commitment to passing down much-needed wisdom in a field that is so intertwined with birth work. When I first heard of her and the trainings she offers, I immediately recognized that adding holistic support for a full spectrum of areas related to reproductive health is a natural addition to birth work.
From fertility to pregnancy, to miscarriage or childbirth (and beyond), there is so much room in our culture for a incorporating more traditional, holistic wisdom that respects people’s bodies and holds the experience as a vital part of the process.
Traditionally, a holistic approach to pregnancy loss and abortion that includes a range of options, patience and support would always would have always been part of the role of those who attended births. Unfortunately it’s a wisdom that is at risk of being lost in our modern world (much like the wisdom of holistic, “undisturbed” birth).
October is Pregnancy Loss Awareness Month, so the topic of this podcast is fitting for the time of year. Lisa and Molly talk about the little known Menstrual Extraction method,
A quote I read in a beautiful article on miscarriage recently struck me. It rings so true, and so powerfully represents why we need more conversation around loss, both planned and unexpected, in the field of birth work:
Lisa and Molly have a raw, open conversation about miscarriage, pregnancy loss, stillbirth, and abortion in a way that may bring some of you to tears. They also touch on a little known practice called Menstrual Extraction. Settle in, grab a cup of tea, and enjoy!
